Leiderdorp Clock Tower at Blue Hour

The stadhuis tower in Leiderdorp rises through three distinct registers — octagonal lantern, slate dome, and weather vane — each one stepping the eye upward against a blue-hour sky that has lost almost all its colour. The heraldic cartouche below the belfry anchors the building to its civic purpose; the tower itself answers to no one but the horizon. Dutch civic architecture at its most direct: ornament kept in proportion, structure carrying the argument.
