Copper Beech and Stone Wall at Burcht van Leiden

29 April 2025 · Leiden walk towards, in and around Burcht

A copper beech in full spring foliage rises beside the ashlar wall of the Burcht van Leiden, its deep burgundy canopy pressed against a clear blue sky. To the left, a bright green oak frames the gap between the two trees — the same season, two entirely different readings of it. The upward perspective flattens the medieval masonry into a single plane of rough stone, holding its ground against the colour above.
