Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden viewed from a slight elevation, Gothic chevet with flying buttresses and lancet windows filling the left half of the frame, slender crossing spire against deep blue summer sky, rooftops and trees in the foreground.

Hooglandse Kerk, Leiden — Gothic Spire Against Summer Sky

29 April 2025 · Leiden walk towards, in and around Burcht

Hooglandse Kerk rises above Leiden's rooftops with the full authority of Dutch Gothic stonework — flying buttresses fanning out from the chevet, tall lancet windows pulling light into the nave, and a slender crossing spire threading up into a clear summer blue. The foreground layer of tiled roofs and street trees anchors the church in the city rather than lifting it out of it. Scale declared, context intact.
