Low-angle upward view of a gothic brick church in Leiden, Netherlands. Nave buttresses and gothic tracery windows converge toward a white lantern tower and slender steeple, topped with a golden cross finial against a clear blue sky.

Gothic Church Spire and Nave Buttresses, Leiden

29 April 2025 · Leiden walk towards, in and around Burcht

Compressed by a low upward angle, the nave buttresses of this medieval Leiden church stack into a single graphic mass — red brick, gothic tracery, and lead-grey rooflines all converging toward the lantern tower above. The golden cross finial holds the top of the frame against a clear blue sky, earning its position as the decisive mark the composition was built around. Weight below, precision above: the geometry does the work.
