Gothic Church Spire Between Brick Walls, Leiden

29 April 2025 · Leiden walk towards, in and around Burcht

Two brick nave walls compress into a narrow gap, and the white Gothic spire rises through it like a punctuation mark against deep summer blue. The warm red brick and limestone dressings carry the weight of the composition; the steeple above resolves it. Leiden's ecclesiastical architecture earns its scale not in grand open views but in the geometry pressed between its own walls — the buttress, the tracery window, the drainpipe, all pulled into one tight upward frame.
