View from the top of the Burcht van Leiden: a crenellated brick rampart wall in strong shadow fills the foreground, with the ornate baroque dome and gilded lantern of the Marekerk rising above the city roofline under a clear blue sky.

Burcht van Leiden Ramparts Framing the Marekerk Dome

29 April 2025 · Leiden walk towards, in and around Burcht

From the top of the Burcht van Leiden, the crenellated brick rampart cuts a hard horizontal line across the frame — and directly above it, the baroque dome of the Marekerk rises into a clear autumn sky with its gilded lantern catching the light. Medieval fortification and 17th-century church locked into a single composition: the wall built to defend the city, the dome built to anchor it. Leiden's centuries sit stacked here, one on top of the other, with the modern skyline holding its distance in the background.
