Curved Rampart and Brick Arch, Burcht van Leiden

29 April 2025 · Leiden walk towards, in and around Burcht

The curved parapet of the Burcht van Leiden pushes forward into the frame, its lichen-crusted stone worn to a rough, mottled palette of grey and ochre. Behind it, a rounded brick arch frames the view through — the same red-orange brick running from the arch voussoirs down through centuries of weathered mortar. Dappled summer shadow moves across both planes at once, using the wall as architecture and the light as a second structure laid over it.
