Burcht van Leiden – Stepped Gable Through a Stone Aperture

29 April 2025 · Leiden walk towards, in and around Burcht

A narrow arrow slit in the Burcht van Leiden's medieval wall compresses a Dutch stepped-gable canal house into a vertical sliver of light. The stone's rough mass and the building's warm brick and terracotta tiles hold the frame taut — two materials separated by centuries, sharing the same rectangle of sky. The wall does the compositional work; the house simply stands there and lets the light make the argument.
