Baroque City Gate with St George Sculpture, Leiden

The Zijlpoort in Leiden frames a deep perspective through wrought iron gates to the street beyond — a city gate doing two jobs at once, threshold and composition. Atop the white stone arch, St George and the Dragon command the roofline under a clear summer sky, heraldic reliefs flanking the pilasters on either side. The baroque stonework carries centuries of civic pride in plain sight, set against the brick and green of a Dutch neighbourhood unchanged around it.
