Leiden Drawbridge Arch Framing a Windmill Cap
9 June 2024 · Leiden
Shot from directly below the arch of a Leiden ophaalbrug, the frame does double duty: the pale wooden arc of the bascule bridge encircles the black cap and latticed sail of a windmill behind it. Chains and a pendant lamp drop through the centre, threading vertical rhythm into what is otherwise a study in curve and geometry. Two canonical Dutch structures sharing one frame — each coherent on its own terms, each sharpened by the other's presence.
