Drawbridge and Windmill on a Leiden Canal

9 June 2024 · Leiden

A timber drawbridge gate tower and a windmill share the same vertical axis here — the windmill sails rise directly through the bridge structure, collapsing two centuries of Dutch engineering into a single frame. Shot on a clear summer day on one of Leiden's historic waterways, the pale cream woodwork of the ophaalbrug holds its geometry against the deep blue sky. The chain mechanism and arched gate frame do the heavy structural work; the windmill behind them turns the composition into something closer to an emblem than a photograph.
