Leiden Stepped Gable on the Nieuwe Rijn
9 June 2024 · Leiden
The Koornbeurs rises above the Nieuwe Rijn in a symmetrical stepped gable that Dutch Golden Age builders understood as both structure and statement. Seven tiers of dark brick, articulated by red-and-white shutters that repeat across the facade like a graphic grid, climb to a lion-crowned apex against a cloudless blue sky. A sailing barge named Antje Rebecca holds the middle ground; a kayaker cuts the foreground water. The building commands the frame — the waterfront life around it simply confirms where you are.
