Classical Doorway on a Red Brick Facade in Leiden
9 June 2024 · Leiden
A Georgian-style stone surround — pediment, pilasters, dentil cornice — set flush against a flat field of red brick on an institutional building in Leiden. The limestone frame reads as a graphic insert: every carved detail pressed hard against the plain coursing surrounding it. The panelled door anchors the vertical axis, warm mahogany against cream stone, while wrought iron railings and anti-pigeon spikes mark the threshold between the public street and whatever seriousness waits inside.
