A covered boat in the foreground anchors the eye before the canal pulls it straight toward the church tower at the far end. Tree-lined quays frame the recession on both sides, the canopy heavy with summer green, while cumulus clouds stack above and fill the upper half of the frame. The gracht holds its own weight as subject — the boat cover, the stone bridge mid-distance, the steeple rising at the vanishing point all doing structural work. Dramatic sky above, still water below: the contrast is built into the place itself.
