Baroque Window Surrounds on a Leiden Canal Facade

Two stacked window surrounds on a Leiden canal-house facade, photographed from street level looking up. The lower surround carries the full weight of Dutch Baroque ornament — deep cartouche scrollwork, acanthus pilasters, shell motifs — while the upper frame is tighter, more restrained. Stacked vertically, the two registers compress the facade into something monumental. A bare flagpole bisects the composition, a plain line running through centuries of carved stucco.
