Wrought Iron Rings on a Whitewashed Groin Vault, Netherlands
9 June 2024 · Leiden
Three wrought iron rings hang from a whitewashed groin vault, each pinned to the plaster at a ridge joint where two vaulted bays meet. The ironwork is blunt and functional — no ornament, just forged metal doing a job it has held for centuries. Below the vault's curve, a band of Delft tiles lines the wall: blue figures on white glaze, precise and decorative, everything the ceiling hardware refuses to be. The material argument is the photo — raw iron, lime plaster, and painted faience sharing a single frame.
