Lucio Fontana's Concetto Spaziale hangs on a white gallery wall in Paris — cobalt blue canvas perforated with dozens of small punctures, held inside a black frame whose top and bottom edges dissolve into jagged, irregular forms. The holes break the surface open; the frame refuses to contain it cleanly. Fontana called this Spatialism: the canvas as a plane in real space, not a window onto an imagined one.
