Atlantes on a Paris Roofline — Sculptural Facade

Four atlantes line the roofline of a Paris apartment building, arms raised as if the cornice rests on their shoulders alone. The figures are spaced with the regularity of a classical frieze, each one turned slightly, the repetition doing the compositional work. An overcast sky flattens the background and pushes the stone figures into sharp relief — the grey of carved limestone against the grey of cloud.
