Amsterdam Canal Under a Dramatic Autumn Sky

An Amsterdam canal stretches toward the horizon, flanked by brick canal houses whose stepped gables rise on both sides in near-perfect symmetry. A single canal boat breaks the stillness of the water below. Above it all, a dominant cumulus formation fills the upper frame — the sky is the subject here as much as the canal; the architecture is what gives it scale. This is the grachtengordel at its most composed, where the geometry of the city and the movement of Dutch light meet in the same frame.
