The Anker Prime 27,650 mAh / 250 W is the top end of Anker's USB-C line — three ports, full power delivery on each, enough capacity to charge a laptop multiple times and most phones a dozen. In practice, the laptop charging is the rare case. The phone, the Pad 6, the camera batteries via USB-C, the Pocket 4, the Mic Mini case — those get the daily work, and the Prime mostly sits half-charged because most days don't drain it. Bought big because the rare case mattered; carried often because it covers everything else. Weight is what you pay for the capacity. At nearly 600 grams it's not a casual pocket carry, and it occupies real volume in a bag. For a day in a city with a laptop and three accessories, it earns its place. For a quick walk with a phone, a smaller pack would be the better tool. --- # Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (80 Ω) Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/accessories/beyerdynamic-dt-770-pro The DT 770 Pro is the closed-back over-ear monitor that's been a studio standard since the 1980s, and the 80-ohm version is the desk-friendly pick — drives properly off an interface like the Scarlett 2i2 without needing a dedicated headphone amp, but with enough impedance to keep the dynamic range that the 32-ohm version sacrifices for phone compatibility. Owned since 2017, originally bought for music listening. The monitoring use came later, when the SM58 and the Scarlett joined the desk and a closed-back reference suddenly became useful for editing the audio it recorded. The same headphones turn out to do both jobs well — music with a slightly elevated bass response and a clean treble, monitoring with isolation good enough to track over a microphone without bleed. The velour pads wear out. Comfortable, warm in summer, and after a few years they need replacing — they're cheap to swap and the rest of the headphone outlasts the pads several times over, which is the kind of repairability the price is partly buying. --- # DJI Mic 3 Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/accessories/dji-mic-3 The Mic 3 came with the Pocket 4 Creator Combo, paired to the camera before delivery, and that's where it stays — clipped to the talent, audio routed straight to the camera over OsmoAudio with no separate receiver. Same logic as the Mic Mini and the 7P, different pairing. The Pocket 4 supports four-channel recording when an external transmitter is connected: the wireless mic and the camera's built-in array record into the same file, separable in post. For a one-person video setup, that means the lav and the room sound both make it into the edit without a second device tracking time. The Mic 3 is the newest generation of the line — more battery than the Mic Mini, range up to 400 metres in clear conditions, dual-stage noise cancellation. Charging is proprietary: the magnetic cable is the only way to top up the transmitter, since there's no USB-C port on it. Lose the cable and the transmitter loses with it. The audio half of the gimbal rig — three things in one workflow, no extra cables. Came in the 7P Vlog Combo, which is the right way to buy it if the gimbal is the use case — the bundle prices both parts cheaper than buying separately. Ten-gram transmitter, magnetic and clip mount options, omnidirectional capsule, eleven-hour battery on the transmitter, and the OsmoAudio protocol that pairs directly with most current DJI cameras and gimbal modules without needing a separate receiver. The standalone receiver came in the box and lives in the case for now. Most contexts where it would matter — camera-mounted use, USB-C plug into a laptop — are already covered by other rigs in the kit, so the receiver is held in reserve rather than working daily. --- # DJI Osmo Mobile 7P Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/accessories/dji-osmo-mobile-7p The 7P came in the Vlog Combo with the Mic Mini and the Multifunctional Module — the magnetic tracking unit that handles subject tracking, Mic Mini reception, and a fill light from the side wheel. Bought partly as a test of whether a dedicated Pocket camera would earn its place in the kit. It did — the Pocket 4 sits in the bag now — but the 7P doesn't get retired by it. The phone is what's already in the pocket, and the 7P is what makes phone footage worth keeping. Built-in extension rod and tripod, ten-hour battery, USB-C charging passthrough to the phone while the module is acting as receiver. The same Mimo-app friction the Pocket 4 has shows up here too — fiddly when you do need it for the more advanced modes. The Scarlett 2i2 is the two-channel USB interface that does the conversion — two combo inputs for mic or instrument, phantom power for condensers, dedicated headphone output with its own gain stage, and the build quality that's made the Scarlett line the default first-interface recommendation for over a decade. Bought for the SM58 — the microphone is XLR, the laptop has no XLR input, the math writes itself — and the side benefit was that the headphone output drives the DT 770 Pro 80-ohm cleanly where the laptop output couldn't. One purchase, two upgrades. The Air mode on the third-gen Scarletts — the optional high-frequency boost — is more useful with condensers than with a dynamic like the SM58. Cardioid pickup that ignores most of the room, dynamic capsule that doesn't care about ambient noise the way a condenser does, built like a brick and effectively unkillable. Bought two years ago for voiceover work, and that's still its primary role. Subtext Lab voice tracks, narration over video, and the side benefit of being good enough for video calls that meeting audio sounds noticeably better than the laptop mic. Plugged into a Scarlett 2i2 for the interface. The SM58 is not a broadcast condenser — it picks up less detail than something like a Shure SM7B or a large-diaphragm studio mic. For voiceover with an untreated room and a decent interface, that's a feature rather than a problem. Less detail means less room noise, and the proximity effect is forgiving when the mic position drifts. --- # Sony WH-1000XM5 Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/accessories/sony-wh-1000xm5 Seven years on, the XM3 finally handed off to the XM5 this year. The 2025 refresh is the version that earned it — same headphones as the original XM5, soft carrying bag instead of the rigid case, lower price for dropping a case that mostly stays in a closet anyway. Wireless noise-cancelling has been the category benchmark for two generations now, and the 2025 model is what's been on the shoulders since. The XM5 is what's worn anywhere except the desk. Travel, walks, focus work in cafes, long train rides — the noise cancellation genuinely changes what's listenable in environments the open ear can't filter. At the desk the DT 770 Pro takes over because wired closed-back is the right tool there; everywhere else, wireless is. What it always has been for this line: the build is plastic, the hinge is a known long-term wear point, and the XM3 lasted long enough that the XM5 has a high bar to clear on durability. The D3500 still handles photography — denoise has kept it useful longer than its age suggests — so the question for a long time wasn't which body to upgrade but what to add. The Pocket 4 adds something the D3500 can't do at all: handheld motion on a 1-inch sensor with three-axis mechanical stabilisation, in a device that fits in a jacket pocket. Travel atmosphere, walking shots, b-roll for the photography work, and the dynamic in-person sections for Subtext Lab pieces that the static webcam shot can't carry. The 107GB of internal storage is the headline upgrade, and the microSD slot is still there — internal speed for the shoot, card capacity and backup for the travel days. 4K up to 240fps, 10-bit D-Log, the new fill light from the Creator Combo for low-light situations, and the Mic 3 transmitter that pairs to the camera natively over OsmoAudio. The DJI Mimo app on Android is the friction. Fiddly to connect, not always clear when it actually is connected. None of that matters once you're shooting, but it adds friction at the start of every session. --- # Nikon D3500 Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/cameras/nikon-d3500 The D3500 is the camera I learned photography on, and the one I still reach for every shoot. 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, no optical low-pass filter, Nikon DX lens mount, 415 grams with battery and card. Discontinued in 2021, available used from the usual places. The sensor still holds up in 2026 — RAW files come out clean and edit generously, and JPEG straight out of the camera looks like someone made a choice about it rather than fighting whatever the camera decided. What makes it hold up is what it asks you to do. Manual, aperture-priority, shutter-priority, programmed auto — I live in programmed auto, adjusting as the light changes. Battery life is genuinely excessive (Nikon rates 1,550 shots per charge, which is closer to "days at a time" than a number on a spec sheet). Guide Mode on the dial teaches camera fundamentals in context rather than in a manual. The limits are real and worth knowing. The 11-point autofocus array clusters toward the centre of the frame and starts showing its age on moving subjects and in low light — fine for architecture and landscape work, frustrating for anything that doesn't stand still. Video caps at 1080p with built-in mono microphones and no external mic port, which is why the Pocket 4 covers the video side instead. Connectivity is Bluetooth-only via Nikon's SnapBridge app; image transfer to phone is slow, and you'll want a card reader for any volume. The LCD is fixed — no tilt, no touch — and charging needs the dedicated brick. The 15-inch chassis from ASUS's mid-tier gaming line, AMD CPU on this revision (the A15 is the Ryzen variant, the F15 is the Intel one), 4060 mobile GPU, 144Hz display, the rugged build and military-spec drop testing the TUF line is named for. Specced up over the years — two NVMe slots filled with Lexar NM790 drives at 4TB and 2TB respectively, 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR5 SODIMM at 4800 MT/s. The configuration handles the Adobe suite, Premiere edits at scale, and software development workflows where compile times start to bite. What gaming-laptop-as-creative-rig always trades: battery life, weight, and fan noise under load. None of that matters at the desk; all of it matters on the road. The Pad 6 covers the lightweight-on-the-road case the A15 won't, and that's the explicit division of labour. --- # Samsung Odyssey G5 32" Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/computer-storage/samsung-odyssey-g5-32 Bought alongside the laptop in 2023 as the desktop display for everything — gaming first, creative work second, daily browsing and code in between. The Odyssey G5 32" is Samsung's curved 1440p VA-panel gaming monitor — 1000R curvature, 165Hz refresh, FreeSync, a screen built for first-person games and immersive single-player rather than spreadsheet work. The curve is the load-bearing detail. A 32-inch flat monitor on a normal desk reads as oversized and forces head movement to take in the corners; the 1000R curve pulls the edges back into the natural eye-line and the screen reads as a sensible size despite the diagonal. That's the trade that makes the whole thing work for daily use, not just gaming. Where it falls short is colour accuracy. VA panels run wider gamuts and deeper contrast than IPS but they're not as consistent, and the curve introduces a slight off-axis colour shift in the corners — neither matters for most desktop work, both matter for grading photos to print. The D3500's colour pipeline lands here for sorting and the broad pass; for final colour decisions, the laptop's IPS panel is the second opinion. An eventual editing monitor sits on the long-term wishlist; the G5 isn't going anywhere in the meantime. --- # Synology DiskStation DS418 Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/computer-storage/synology-ds418 The DS418 is the four-bay home NAS from Synology — Realtek processor, gigabit network, the DSM operating system that's made Synology the home-NAS default. Bought as the storage backbone for the photography work — RAW files from the D3500, edited deliverables, archived collections — data that doesn't tolerate sitting on a single drive anywhere. Four bays is the right count for the use case. Two-bay units force a choice between capacity and redundancy that runs out of room fast once a few years of NEF files accumulate; six-bay and above is overkill for one photographer. Four bays gives both growth and a parity drive without overprovisioning. The processor is the limit. The DS418 isn't built for Plex transcoding, virtual machine workloads, or the more compute-heavy DSM packages — Synology's higher-end Plus models cover that. For pure storage and backup duties, which is what the role here actually is, the underclassed CPU stays out of the way and lets the network and the disks do the work. --- # Xiaomi Pad 6 Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/computer-storage/xiaomi-pad-6 Bigger than the phone, smaller than the laptop. The Pad 6 is Xiaomi's 11-inch Android tablet — Snapdragon 870, 144Hz display, official keyboard case and stylus available as accessories, the whole bundle priced well below the equivalent iPad-with-Pencil-and-Magic-Keyboard setup. Bought for the role neither device covers: comfortable to read or write on for an hour without committing to a workstation posture. Light browsing, drafting in markdown, reading long-form, occasional video — the work that doesn't need the laptop's compute and doesn't fit a phone's screen. The keyboard case turns it into a credible portable typewriter for travel days when the A15's weight and battery life don't justify themselves. No editing happens here — the colour pipeline lives on the desktop and the laptop only. The stylus is the open potential. Drawing is a skill that lives on the long list of things the kit could support that the kit hasn't yet been pushed toward, and the Pad 6 is the device where that would happen if it does. The keyboard handles the work it's already doing; the stylus is reserved for whenever that lane opens up. --- # Lenses Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/lenses Lenses covers the gear that fits this part of the kit. --- # Nikkor AF-P 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/lenses/nikon-18-55mm-kit The kit lens that came in the box with the D3500. Light, plastic, modest aperture, and the lens that shot most of what's on this site before any of the others arrived. A kit lens earns its name honestly — it's the cheapest lens that ships with the camera, and the spec sheet shows it. f/3.5-5.6 is slow, the build is plastic, the rendering is unremarkable. None of that turned out to matter much. The 18-55mm range covers most of what a body-around-the-neck day actually needs, the autofocus is quick, and the VR works. What the lens doesn't do is encourage you to overthink the lens. That's the case for it. Kit lenses get dismissed as starter glass on the way to better glass, but they keep showing up in the actual frames. This one still does. --- # Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/lenses/nikon-10-20mm The 10-20mm is the lens I reach for when the subject is bigger than I am. Architecture that won't fit in a frame at 18mm, a sweep of landscape that needs the horizon to stretch, an interior tight enough that a kit zoom makes you back into a wall. 15–30mm equivalent on DX, 109 degrees of view at the wide end, and a field that bends space in a way the human eye doesn't — which is exactly the point. Built for the price it costs. 230 grams, plastic mount, no physical switches (VR and focus mode live in the camera menu), a stepping motor that's genuinely quiet and quick. VR rated at 3.5 stops, which is how handheld low-light shots stay usable without a tripod. A 72mm filter thread that doesn't rotate during focus — polarisers and NDs thread on and stay put. Barrel distortion at 10mm is significant and visible, especially on architecture where straight lines want to stay straight. Lightroom's lens profile correction handles it in one click, but if you shoot RAW without applying the profile, the wide end looks drunk. Corners soften and show colour fringing away from centre — typical behaviour for a budget ultra-wide, again cleaned up in post. The lens leans on digital correction, and knowing that is most of the relationship. --- # Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/lenses/nikon-35mm-dx The 35mm sits at the other end of the bag from the 10-20mm. 52.5mm equivalent on DX — what gets called a "normal" lens because its field of view is close to what the centre of human vision actually takes in. Everything at its own size, no wide-angle stretch, no telephoto compression. When a shot wants to look like you just saw it, this is the lens. Fast aperture (f/1.8, three stops brighter than the kit zoom at the same focal length), 200 grams, Silent Wave Motor for quick quiet autofocus, 52mm filter thread, minimum focus distance of 30cm. The build is simple — plastic barrel, metal mount, one AF/MF switch and a damped focus ring, no distance scale, no VR. It's the lens that disappears on the camera and earns its place there. Things to know. The aperture is not smooth across its range: wide open at f/1.8 shows mild longitudinal chromatic aberration (green and magenta fringing on out-of-focus highlights) and soft corners. Stopping down to f/2.8 clears both. Bokeh is decent but not creamy — the seven aperture blades give away the price. Around two percent barrel distortion, easily corrected in Lightroom. No stabilisation means handheld shutter speeds need to stay above 1/60 or so without a tripod, which the fast aperture largely handles. Different job from the 10-20mm. The wide zoom opens space outward; the 35mm closes it in. --- # Software Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/software Software covers the gear that fits this part of the kit. --- # Adobe Lightroom Classic Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/software/lightroom-classic Lightroom Classic is where every shoot lands after import. Catalog on the left, develop module on the right, the same interface since forever and the same interface I'd still choose. RAW files stay untouched; edits live as instructions in a database until export. That non-destructive pipeline is the reason the software has held up for more than a decade — the original negative is always still there, and every decision is reversible. The real argument for it, at least in this kit, is lens profile correction. The 10-20mm's barrel distortion at 10mm is significant on paper; one checkbox in the Lens Corrections panel solves it before I've looked at the rest of the photo. The 35mm prime's colour fringing wide open, the corner softness on both lenses, the vignetting at edge apertures — all of it lives in a lens profile Adobe maintains, applied automatically the moment the file is imported. The lens limits I named in the earlier entries exist in the optics and stop existing in the catalog. That's most of why they're acceptable. Organisation is the other half. Folders, collections, smart collections, star ratings, flags, colour labels, keywords, metadata filters — whatever way you want to find a photo three years after you shot it, Lightroom has a handle for it. The catalog is a database, which means that if you move files outside Lightroom it gets confused, and which means that smart collections, keyword search, and metadata filters all work the way a database search should. Things that aren't great. It's subscription-only, and Adobe's pricing trends one direction. The interface is unfashionable compared to Lightroom CC (the cloud-first sibling), and the catalog model does expect you to understand it. The recent AI features are a mix — Assisted Culling is useful and free; the Firefly credits are a separate line item and don't always give results worth the spend. Sorted, rated, edited, exported. The whole chain sits in one application, and that's the argument. --- # Adobe Photoshop Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/software/adobe-photoshop Photoshop is where the work that Lightroom Classic can't handle lands. Lightroom is the catalog and the develop module — global edits, lens corrections, the non-destructive pipeline. Photoshop is layers, masks, compositing, and pixel-level retouching. Two tools, one subscription, one workflow that hands files between them via the Edit In option without breaking the round-trip back to the catalog. Photoshop gets pulled in selectively. Compositing for Subtext Lab visuals when an essay needs an image that doesn't exist in the portfolio. Detail work where a Lightroom brush can't reach. Occasional generative fills when something distracting needs to disappear from a frame. The recent AI features are useful when used sparingly — Generative Fill and Remove Tool both work better for content removal than for creative additions, where the synthetic look gives itself away. Where it falls short is being lean. Photoshop is thirty-five years of accumulated features, most of which any individual user will never touch, and the application launches like it. Affinity Photo and Pixelmator Pro are real alternatives that load faster and ship the features that matter for most photo work. The reason Photoshop stays here and not on those is the same reason Lightroom stays — file format, plugin ecosystem, and the fact that the rest of the world sends you PSDs. --- # Adobe Premiere Pro Source: https://studiotj.com/gear/software/adobe-premiere-pro Premiere Pro is the video editor that finishes the chain the Pocket 4 starts. The camera shoots 10-bit D-Log, the workflow needs a non-linear editor that handles that footage natively, and Premiere Pro reads the LUTs DJI provides without conversion or transcoding. Lumetri Color for grading, integrated audio mixing, and the same Edit In bridge to Photoshop that the rest of the suite shares. The use here is everything video. StudioTJ atmospheric pieces — the photography extended into video. Subtext Lab in-person sections cut alongside narration tracks recorded on the SM58. Travel footage that didn't have a place to go before the Pocket 4 was in the kit. Project files measured in tens of gigabytes is the normal weight of any real video edit, and the editing rig handles them fine. What Premiere isn't is reliable the way mature software ought to be. Colour photography of architecture is the main lane — bold geometry, urban form, the lines buildings hold. Monochrome is the other lane, and the one I started in. It's stayed because monochrome carries texture, weight, and contrast on its own terms. StudioTJ shares the site with The Subtext Lab — essays and video about games, film, TV, music, and the way digital society is shaping all of them. The lens is analytical and Dutch. The Dutch part stays even when the writing is in English. The site is curated. Everything here has been chosen, edited, and shipped on purpose. ## The work The portfolio sits in four collections. The Signature Collection is bold architecture in colour. Old buildings, new buildings, and the lines that hold them together. Punchy, accurate, made to print well. Monochrome Moods is just cool. Black and white photography that earns its medium — texture, contrast, weight, and the kind of light that only reads in greyscale. The Atmospheric Collection is sense of place.
